Technical Support Engineer

Job description:

Aspera, a fast-growing software start-up in the San Francisco Bay Area building leading edge data transport technology, is seeking a smart and experienced technical professional with good knowledge of operating systems and application software, and excellent communication skills to provide first level customer technical support. You will be the customer's primary point of contact for technical support and consultation, a role of critical importance to our customers who depend on our file transfer technology in daily business processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify issues reported by customers and attempt to troubleshoot to completion, typically over email, web-meetings or phone
  • Escalate complicated issues to senior support or development
  • Work closely with the development and test teams to ensure issues are corrected and usability problems are understood
  • Contribute to developing tech support manuals and customer self-help documentation

Required Skills:

  • Good knowledge of Windows, Unix and Mac OS X system administration, with emphasis in user and group management, file system permissions and networking
  • Understanding of networks and basic network troubleshooting and packet tracing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication with customers, including writing sound technical documentation and conducting in-person/online training.
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills. Comfort with common debuggers, packet analyzers and trace tools a plus.
  • Ability to thrive in a self-starter, non-hierarchical environment including independently initiating, organizing and executing needed work in varied areas.

Desired Background:

  • B.Sc. or greater in Computer Science/Engineering or related discipline
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in developing and supporting software systems. Exceptional candidates with less experience will be considered.
