Overview

Data drives innovation in the life sciences. Collaborative teams in biomedical research, pharmacology, academia, government and national laboratories need to quickly and efficiently exchange and process vast amounts of data. New research technologies – in particular, next-generation genomic sequencing – create tens of gigabytes of data for each experimental run. Supporting the movement of these huge data sets, Aspera software provides breakthrough high-speed file transfer across the globe for projects such as 1000 Genomes, which serves up vast public databases for the study of human genomic variation. Scientific users enjoy familiar Unix-style interfaces, embeddable APIs and user-friendly web and desktop GUIs.

Benefits

  • Enable geographically distributed collaborative teams to exchange huge data sets at maximum speed, regardless of distance and network conditions.

  • Utilize proven, secure and reliable transfer technology, widely adopted by government agencies and throughout many industries for business-critical data movement.

  • Integrated superior transport capabilities to your systems, services and hardware devices via industry-leading open APIs.

Applications

  • Global Research Data Contribution — As part of the 1000 Genomes Project, the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) of the National Institute of Health (NIH) exchanges sequencing data at a rate close to 1 Gbps with the European Bioinformatics Institute using Aspera software — allowing genomic sequences to be exchanged globally at maximum speed. Before using Aspera, the transfers achieved only about 20 Mbps on the same network infrastructure. NCBI/NIH expects to support over 1,000 users globally with their Aspera-enabled transfer infrastructure.

  • High-speed Archival — Providing the fastest data transport solution between remote sites, Aspera software is perfectly tailored to provide automated, high-performance data backups and archival for the large volumes of data generated by companies and organizations in life sciences.

  • Transport Integration — Scientific hardware devices, including genome sequencers, generate huge data sets that need to be moved for further processing and archived. With its easily embeddable, high-speed transfer technology, Aspera is the ideal choice for manufacturers to enhance their offering with superior transport capabilities and better address the requirements of their life sciences customers.
