Aspera Unveils New Products for Broadcast and Digital Media at NAB 2010

April 12, 2010
Company Also Demonstrates Breakthrough Solutions with Amazon Web Services, EMC, and Other Industry Partners

LAS VEGAS, NAB Show, Booth SL4114—April 12, 2010—Aspera, Inc. today introduced three new software products and a high-performance transport core for mobile applications that expand the Aspera ecosystem for transporting and managing digital assets at maximum speed regardless of file size, transfer distance or network condition.

Aspera Sync – a new multi-directional synchronization application built on Aspera’s patented fasp™ transport technology – is designed to set new standards for high-speed multi-site synchronization of large file sets over the wide area. Also based on fasp technology, the new Aspera Cargo personal client provides end-users with an easy-to-use email paradigm for person-to-person file delivery using Aspera servers. The new fasp-AIR™ product line – including the new Aspera Mobile Uploader for the iPhone and iPad – will enable companies to empower their remote contributors with high-speed file transfer to and from mobile devices up to 3 times faster than regular TCP over 3G networks and up to 100 times faster over 802.11 WiFi networks.

At NAB 2010, Aspera will be previewing further enhancements to the workflow capabilities of its product line. The upcoming Aspera Workflow Composition Framework within Aspera Console and via a new plug-in API will allow organizations to build automated transfer workflows for content ingest, distribution and transformation, including third-party solutions, even cloud-based services.

Show attendees will also be able to catch a sneak peek at a next-generation reliable multicast transport solution in development, which will provide highly efficient distribution of digital file content over satellite multicast networks for applications such as digital cinema.

Stop by the Aspera booth SL4114 to see a demonstration of the new products and partner technologies detailed below.

New Products at a Glance

Aspera Sync
is a new continuous file synchronization application built on Aspera’s patented
fasp transport technology. It raises the bar for high-speed, multi-site, multi-directional synchronization of large file sets over the wide area, while matching the security and reliability standards of Aspera flagship technology. Aspera Sync is designed for all types of data replication workflows, remote backup and disaster/recovery implementations.

Key features include:

  • Multi-directional synchronization of remote files and directories, including one-to-one, one-to-many, and full-mesh synchronization

  • Unprecedented scalability: millions of files, multi-TB data sets

  • Fastest speed for bulk data synchronization over WANs

  • Flexible transfer and bandwidth management and conflict resolution policies

  • Console for configuration, management and reporting

Aspera Cargo
is a new standalone client for Aspera’s
faspex™ Server that improves person-to-person file delivery by dramatically accelerating and simplifying global file-based collaboration using an email paradigm. Cargo is the first client application to utilize a new open-source services API for Aspera transfers supporting email addressability, package-based delivery, and automatic Inbox download.

Key features include:

  • Intuitive, email-like paradigm for sending and receiving packages, including a built-in address book with contact import capability

  • Support for multiple concurrent fasp transfers

  • Real-time transfer rate control and monitoring for each delivery, including transfer pause, cancel and resume functionality with automatic retry option

  • Option to automatically download received packages or initiate manually upon notification

  • Searchable delivery history for easy re-sending or forwarding of packages

fasp-AIR™ SDK. The fasp-AIR™ product line will enable companies to empower their remote contributors with high-speed file transfer to and from mobile devices over wireless networks. This embeddable software library will allow application developers to integrate superior transport capabilities to their own applications.

Key features include:

  • Achieves on average two to three times the speed of regular TCP for today’s cellular networks (3G and LTE), and utilizes the full bandwidth capacity

  • Achieves throughputs up to 100 times the speed of TCP on double-band 802.11n WiFi networks over the WAN

  • Overcomes bottlenecks on wireless networks and allows content to be delivered with low-background trickle or high-priority foreground policies

Aspera Mobile Uploader for the iPhone and iPad
. Based on Aspera’s fasp-AIR™ transport core, this new app allows iPhone and iPad users to upload content generated on their device to a mobile-enabled Aspera server (including Aspera On-Demand for Amazon Web Services).

Key features include

  • Superior transfer performance over wireless networks, including cellular (3G, LTE) and Wi-Fi (802.11g/n)

  • Easy-to-use uploader app that directly accesses the iPhone picture and video library

  • Support for remote, mobile video capture in the field and wireless transfer to an Aspera server, even at global distances

Partner Activity at a Glance

Ultra High-speed Transport with EMC® Celerra

Aspera has teamed up with storage experts EMC to offer a joint ultra high-speed file transfer and storage solution capable of delivering unprecedented multi-Gbps movement of large data over global wide area networks. This new solution makes it possible to transfer uncompressed HD video, digital cinema or 3D film files around the world in minutes, using commodity hardware and public Internet.

Aspera Workflow Composition Technology Framework

Aspera's Workflow Composition Framework enables activation, monitoring and general automation of third-party systems (transcoding, watermarking, virus scanning, content verification, text overlays, etc.) through Aspera Console – a web-based application for network-wide management, monitoring and control of Aspera transfers. At NAB, Aspera is demonstrating the flexibility of this new technology platform with Aspera partner Panvidea, who specializes in content preparation, packaging and multi-screen distribution. Using the new API, Panvidea fully integrates its cloud-based, professional suite of post-production tools with Aspera's high-speed file transfer environment.

File-based Workflows in the Cloud

Aspera is quickly becoming the de-facto standard to move data to and from the cloud. Aspera On-Demand for Amazon Web Services enables users to take full advantage of Amazon’s elastic computing capabilities. Pioneering service providers are also leveraging Aspera’s next-generation transport to power their cloud-based offering: Axceleon for 3D rendering, AdCast for global advertising media distribution to broadcasters, and many more.

File-based Workflows across the Media Enterprise

The proliferation of digital media has led major media companies and their IT partners to design fully-integrated systems for the creation, distribution, repurposing, and archiving of their file-based media assets. Unlike “one-size-fits-all” offerings, Aspera already serves as the high-speed transport core for best-of-breed file-based media workflows based on industry-standard products from Accenture, CEITON Technologies, IBM, Omneon, Rhozet, and many more.
