At NAB Aspera Puts Spotlight on Digital Media Ecosystem

April 11, 2011
File Transport Technology Provider for Media Industry Showcases Next-Gen Solutions for Enabling Cloud, Workflow, Collaboration and Mobile

LAS VEGAS—2011 NAB SHOW, Booth SL9620—April 11, 2011—At the NAB Show, Aspera Inc. is showcasing next-generation file transport software that is powering the evolving digital media ecosystem to enable real-time collaboration, big data sharing and content distribution on a global scale.  Media companies are turning to Aspera software to realize the promise of file-based workflows in terms of productivity, efficiency and capacity.

Aspera stands at the junction of these requirements, powering cloud, mobile and on-premise workflows, providing innovative solutions for super high-speed file transfer and file-based collaboration, and pioneering the next generation of high-speed data synchronization and multicast distribution. All Aspera solutions are powered by fasp™ technology, patented and proven as the next generation transport for moving file-based data of unlimited scale over IP networks at any distance, with maximum speed, predictability, and security.

Visit Booth SL9620 to see live demonstrations of Aspera software, including:

Collaboration—Person-to-person and project-based file exchange

The Aspera faspex™ person-to-person file exchange solution combines ease-of-use with performance, security, scalability and management capabilities. Described as industry “gold-standard” in security, faspex™ provides an end-to-end security model built on the strongest open standards cryptography, and is both FIPS 140-2 and third-party certified.

  • At NAB see a preview of Aspera faspex™ version 2.5 with powerful new capabilities for ad hoc submission through private drop boxes and enterprise user and group management extended to include seamless authorization against all types of LDAP directory stores.

  • See the new Cargo Downloader 1.0, a new desktop widget for Windows and Mac that automatically downloads available content from faspex™, allowing end users to automatically receive packages from multiple servers and enabling easy, automated publishing of content to large numbers of users or receivers.

Workflow—File-based workflow automation and orchestration

The Aspera Orchestrator is a new web-based application and SDK platform for creating and managing automated Aspera file transfer workflows. It powers tasks ranging from post-upload, automated file forwarding after upload to full-blown broadcast and VOD process orchestration, while making automation of complex content workflows built on Aspera transfers easy, extensible, and traceable. Orchestrator includes:

  • An interactive designer for easy authoring of complex process sequences

  • A browser interface for monitoring active workflows

  • A library of plug-ins for leading transcoding, quality control, virus scanning, ad insertion, and digital fingerprinting solutions. Current customer deployments are utilizing third-party plugins developed for Interra Baton, MS SCOM, Symantec, McAffee, BigBand, Telestream FlipFactory and others.

Cloud—Enabling cloud-based media solutions with superior big-data transport

With distance-neutral, high-speed transfer performance, Aspera transport makes big-data access to and from compute and storage clouds a reality. The top public and private cloud offerings from Amazon Web Services, Windows Azure, EMC Atmos as well as management platforms such as RightScale are working with Aspera to offer their customers a faster, more efficient way to move files to and from remote infrastructures.

  • At NAB, experience the Squeeze Solution Pack, a powerful enterprise cloud encoding platform brought to market jointly by Sorenson Media, RightScale, Amazon Web Services and Aspera, providing users a highly flexible, automatically scalable cloud encoding solution, with content ingest enabled with Aspera transfers from iPhone and all desktop web browsers to Aspera On-Demand servers in AWS.

  • Check out the Aspera whisper suite for preview demonstrations of the next-generation fasp™ transport architecture designed for integration in any application as a high-performance bulk-data transport stream and enabling direct, high-speed transfer to and from AWS S3 and other cloud storage platforms.

Mobile—High-speed contribution and delivery over wireless

The Aspera Mobile Uploader for the iPhone and iPad empowers remote news professionals and contributors with high-speed, predictable file transfer to and from mobile devices.

  • Over typical 3G and 4G networks, fasp-AIR™ performance is on average up to three times faster than regular TCP and fully utilizes the available channel capacity, independent of the high packet loss associated with wireless links.

  • Mobile transfers are fully interoperable with the Aspera Connect Server and Aspera On-demand, and are manageable through the Aspera Console.

  • Aspera is giving NAB attendees a first-look preview of fasp-AIR™ on the Android platform.

Innovation—Next-generation fasp™, ultra high-speed transport and multicast

Aspera is offering NAB attendees who request a private meeting a sneak peek at the next incarnation of Aspera's patented fasp™ transport, a new architecture with APIs enabling high-speed bulk-data transport in any application, beyond file transfer. A dedicated demo station features Aspera’s latest innovations in file transfer performance and IP multicast technology.

Ultra High-speed File Transfer:

  • Multiple enterprise storage vendors, including BlueArc, EMC, Isilon, HP and NetApp have recently introduced breakthrough solutions with Aspera fasp™ transport technology running on commodity hardware, for transfers of large media files and file sets over worst-case global Internet conditions at several Gigabits per second in a single transfer stream.

  • Meet Aspera's R&D team for demonstrations and discussions about our latest benchmarks with enterprise and cloud storage vendors and best practices for maximizing all points in the end-to-end path.

New Digital Multicast Technology

  • Designed for large-scale deployments such as digital cinema, VOD or digital signage, Aspera will be showing fasp-MC™, a new patented point-to-multipoint transport protocol for IP multicast networks, bringing the speed and bandwidth efficiency of Aspera technology to multicast distribution applications.

  • The protocol works over any IP multicast-enabled network – both terrestrial and satellite – and is designed for maximum repair efficiency and bandwidth utilization regardless of network conditions and for large numbers of receivers (~1000).

  • The protocol includes a novel continuous on-the-fly repair algorithm that eliminates and pre and post-transmission decoding delays even over networks with highly correlated burst losses, random losses and high latency.

  • At NAB, Aspera is previewing the first version of fasp-MC™, a scriptable command line distribution tool that implements the protocol.
