Now available: Aspera Console v1.5
March 22, 2011
Powerful reporting capabilities, major new functionality and performance enhancements

We are delighted to announce the immediate availability of Aspera Console version 1.5, the web platform for centralized configuration, tracking, reporting, and automation of Aspera transfers. This release provides major new functionality and performance enhancements.

Release highlights

  • Powerful new transfer reporting capabilities for project-specific reporting and designed for large scale transfer history. Reports can be organized, sorted and filtered by virtually any transfer attribute (paths, IPs, status, etc.), including custom categories derived from transfer attributes and metadata assigned to transfers within the various Aspera applications. Report templates may be scheduled for automatic runs and email delivery.

  • Secure SSH tunnels for automatically connecting managed nodes to the Console. Tunnels secure management traffic and consolidate all Aspera control traffic to a single SSH connection for minimal firewall configuration.

  • New automatic backup and convenient data purge functions. Create scheduled backups of console configuration and history data and clean up Console data by status and age from the web UI.

  • Dashboard map visibility for transfers between managed and unmanaged nodes.

  • A new robust and easy install and configuration system.

  • New control panel for enterprise management of Console services including health monitoring and remote start/stop control.

  • Faster performance for very large transfer databases (1 million records) and improved file search speed.

  • Plus many other features and important bug fixes.

Aspera Console 1.5 is now available for download for Linux 32/64 and Windows.

When upgrading from Console version 1.4, please be sure to carry out the required pre-install steps detailed in the Upgrade instructions in the installation guide. This is essential for a successful upgrade.

New features in Aspera Console 1.5

Reporting

  • New reporting engine supporting creation and running of custom report templates based on transfer history data. Data includes logging for individual files, transfer sessions, and entire jobs (including re-tried sessions).

  • Built-in GUI wizard for generating report templates including the ability to organize reports by multiple field levels, add and remove included fields, sort the resulting data on multiple fields with precedence, and filter for specific field values and matching expressions.

  • Advanced report generator  for authoring and validating custom SQL queries as report templates, and comprehensive online help with editable example templates and documentation of the underlying database tables.

  • Ability to run reports, including scheduling automatic runs with email delivery to configurable recipient lists.

  • Automatic generation of online, CSV and MS Excel report formats. Manages report sizes to prevent unintentional emailing of unmanageably large reports.

  • Improved performance for processing very large transfer history databases (1 million records)

  • Internal data canonicalizer for maximizing report data integrity

  • Individual user permissions on transfer paths enforced for reports. Users see only report data to which they have access rights.

  • Custom Fields

  • New engine supporting the creation and assignment of custom reporting fields to individual files or transfer sessions. Allows users to build reports containing and organized by custom fields, to meet business-specific needs.

  • Custom fields are comprised of one or more rules for matching transfer data logged to the console. Rules may consist of regular expressions, substring matches, or equalities for virtually any attribute logged for files or sessions, and may combine together one or more matching condition, and may dynamically assign tag values based on the matched data itself.

  • Custom metadata assigned to transfers within the various Aspera applications can be used in custom field rules, allowing Console reports to include the metadata, or be organized by it.  Metadata can be set within the Aspera Server and Client GUI Transfer Name option; within Faspex in the Package Send Area;  or within the session cookie when using a command line 'ascp' transfer, or when building a custom application or web portal using the Aspera SDK.

Node Management

  • Option to automatically connect Console to Nodes via a secure SSH tunnel. Consolidates both database reporting and Console SOAP traffic over a single SSH management connection and uses the existing SSH service on the node to simplify firewall configuration and secure management traffic.

  • Automatic health-monitoring of the tunnel with reporting of status to the Nodes page and automatic reconnection of the tunnel on failure.

Database Maintenance

  • On-demand and scheduled automatic backup of Console configuration and database files to a local backup file.

  • GUI for purging transfer file and session history by status (successful, zero byte, cancelled, failed) for a configurable date range.

Search

  • Improved file search performance and bugs for file search fixed throughout the application.

Dashboard Map

  • Transfers between managed and unmanaged nodes are now drawn on the map.

Console Scalability and Management

  • New control panel for health monitoring, logging, and start/stop control of the constituent console background services.

  • New background process engine for improved robustness and performance.

  • Performance optimizations and bug fixes for faster responsiveness in the dashboard and activity views for very large databases.

Smart Transfers

  • New option allowing sharing of templates using personal endpoints.

  • New option to specify glob-matching patterns for selecting which files to transfer. Allows for easier selection of large numbers of files in Smart Transfer templates.

  • New option to delete folders after successful transfer.

Installer and 'asctl' configuration

  • New dramatically improved asctl system for installation, upgrade and configuration of Console. Fixes all previous install and configuration issues and provides a dramatically better user experience.

Third Party Component upgrades

  • Upgraded to MySQL 5.1.54

  • Upgraded to Apache 2.2.17

  • Upgraded to Ruby 1.8.7
