10. Virtual Machine Deployments

Aspera has introduced capability in its adaptive rate control algorithms to cancel the effect of spurious timing measurements that are common on virtual machines. If you would like to run Aspera software on a virtual machine, please ensure that it is of the "HyperVisor" style, where the virtual OS runs on the OS directly, and also please consult Aspera to ensure you are running version 2.6.4+.

The significant imprecision in timing measurements on hosted virtual machines that run on top of a standard OS makes it impossible to achieve the high-precision timing used by Aspera products to achieve stable, precise rate control. We recommend against running our products on hosted VMs for this reason although running on "HyperVisor" VMs can work very well.
